Streets - Inquiry Starter
Black and white aerial images of various street patterns move in time to a jazz accompaniment. The main purpose of Patterns is to promote open-ended thinking about streets, without any prior information revealing the actual source of the images.

The suggested Pre-Viewing activities involve developing awareness of why having names is useful. Another discussion question asks students to think about other living and non-living things that are often given names. Are there any examples in their list that were probably not there or used 100 years ago?

Streets - Where Am I?
A number of shots showing various features of Bulls, (not directly named), are presented. Using the visual clues, pupils should be able to make informed predictions about the name of the town. (Bulls is a small town in New Zealand)

Presents a glimpse of animals in their natural environment and provides an opportunity to discuss concepts such as habitat, animal names and classification, establishing present student understanding in the process

Vincent van Gogh - Theo's Brother
Designed to introduce some data about Vincent van Gogh without directly using his name. Opens with text statements about whether or not viewers have ever felt misunderstood. Mentions a few of his painting interests and presents some of Vincent’s thoughts about painting from his letters, and the financial assistance of his brother Theo. Briefly raises the desire of humans to ‘leave marks.’

Monet - Reflections
With no visible title, this video presents images of the world with no direct filming of an object. Each shot is a reflection, shows reflections or is a multiple reflection of reality. Man made and natural objects are featured. As the video progresses, some subjects are revealed only through their reflections – the actual object is not depicted.

Both these videos use only images from the work of Monet. Each takes the form of a journey that is roughly geographical and chronological, in terms of his paintings. They may be thought of as story sequences – a journey through paintings. There are 2 videos in this module.

During his career Monet embarked on several "series of" paintings. A selection from the series depicting the Cathedral at Rouen are presented in this video. VHS home movie footage from the 80’s and a static image presentation of period photos and paintings, provide students an opportunity to think about the garden areas that Monet created from which inspiration for many of his paintings came.
